FAQs

Answers to our most asked Children's Dental questions

Still have questions?

When should my child first visit the dentist, and why is it important?

The Australian Dental Association recommends a first dental visit by age one or within six months of the first tooth appearing. Early visits help prevent issues and establish a strong foundation for oral health.

The dentist will examine your child’s teeth, gums, and jaw, possibly do a gentle cleaning, and provide oral hygiene tips. To prepare, speak positively about the visit, avoid words that may cause fear, and use books or videos to familiarize them with the experience.

Managing dental anxiety in children involves creating a welcoming and calming environment. Paediatric dentists are trained to use kid-friendly language, explain procedures in an understandable and non-threatening way, and employ distraction techniques. Sedation options, like nitrous oxide (laughing gas), may be used for particularly anxious children. Encouraging positive dental experiences from a young age and regular visits can help alleviate anxiety over time.

Tooth decay, gum disease, and misaligned teeth are common. Prevention includes regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, limiting sugary foods, and visiting the dentist every six months.

Baby bottle tooth decay occurs when teeth are frequently exposed to sugary drinks like milk or juice, especially at bedtime. Prevent it by wiping gums after feedings, brushing once teeth appear, and avoiding bottles at bedtime.

Use a rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste for children under 3 and a pea-sized amount from ages 3-6. Flossing should begin when two teeth touch, usually around age 2-3. Parents should assist with brushing and flossing until the child can do it properly, usually by age 6-7.

Lead by example, brush and floss together, make oral care fun with songs or timers, and schedule regular dental check-ups.

Dental sealants are protective coatings applied to molars to prevent cavities. They are recommended for children at higher risk of decay, typically once permanent molars erupt.

Choose a kid-friendly dentist, use positive language, and avoid phrases that may cause fear. Distraction techniques, such as toys or music, and sedation options like nitrous oxide can also help.

Prolonged thumb-sucking or pacifier use beyond age 3-4 can cause bite issues or misaligned teeth. If the habit continues, a dentist can recommend strategies to help break it.

Signs include crowded teeth, difficulty chewing, prolonged thumb-sucking, or jaw shifting. An orthodontic evaluation by age 7 can determine if treatment is needed.

For a permanent tooth, rinse it with milk (or water if unavailable) without scrubbing and try to reinsert it. If not possible, store it in milk and seek emergency dental care immediately. For baby teeth, do not attempt reinsertion—consult a dentist.

A diet high in sugary foods and drinks increases the risk of decay. Encourage fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and water over sugary snacks, and limit frequent snacking to reduce acid attacks on teeth.

Sports, especially contact sports, can pose a risk to children’s dental health. Wearing a mouthguard can help protect against dental injuries. Custom-fitted mouthguards from a dentist offer the best protection and comfort.
